What is IIT JAM?

IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for Masters) is the national entrance test for admission to M.Sc (two-year), Joint M.Sc–Ph.D, M.Sc–Ph.D Dual Degree, and other post-bachelor's programmes at the IITs and IISc Bengaluru. It is conducted jointly by the IITs and IISc on a rotational basis, with one IIT serving as the organising institute each year.

JAM opened the IIT system to science graduates from any undergraduate institution — not only engineering graduates — giving students from B.Sc programmes access to postgraduate study at India's premier technical institutes.

Test papers and subjects

JAM is conducted as a computer-based test. There are multiple test papers, each corresponding to a science subject — such as Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Biotechnology, Geology, and Economics. Candidates choose the paper(s) relevant to the M.Sc programme they are targeting, and different IITs require different JAM papers for different programmes.

The exact list of test papers, number of questions, types of questions (MCQ, MSQ, NAT), total marks, duration, and negative-marking rules are published in the official information brochure each year. Always verify these details on the official site for the current cycle.

Eligibility

Candidates who have a bachelor's degree (or are in their final year) in the relevant discipline can apply. The minimum aggregate percentage requirement — and whether it applies with or without rounding — is specified in the official information brochure. Eligibility also varies by the specific M.Sc programme and the IIT you are applying to; some programmes have subject-specific prerequisites.

Confirm the eligibility for your target programme and institution on the official JAM site and the individual IIT's graduate admissions page each year.

Admission process and counselling

Qualifying in JAM does not guarantee admission. Shortlisted candidates apply for admission to specific IIT programmes through a centralised portal (JOAPS — JAM Online Application Processing System). Seat allocation is based on JAM score, the number of seats, the programme preferences submitted, and eligibility. Each IIT sets its own cut-off independently.

Applicants for programmes at IISc should check IISc's own graduate admissions portal, as the process may differ. No score guarantees a seat at any particular institute or programme.

Why consider IIT JAM?

JAM is one of the few routes through which a science graduate from any background can access the IIT ecosystem for postgraduate study — benefiting from IIT faculty, research infrastructure, peer groups, and the academic credential. Programmes cover pure and applied sciences, mathematics, statistics, and interdisciplinary areas.

Career directions after an IIT M.Sc include research (Ph.D programmes in India and abroad), industry roles in relevant technical fields, and professional postgraduate programmes. Outcomes vary widely by subject, institute, and individual — there are no guaranteed placements.

Frequently asked questions

Which IIT conducts JAM each year?

The organising institute rotates — a different IIT is designated each year. The official website for each cycle is announced by the current organising IIT. The current year's official JAM website is published by the organising IIT (e.g. jam2026.iitb.ac.in for JAM 2026). Search "IIT JAM" followed by the current year to find the active portal.

Can engineering graduates appear for IIT JAM?

JAM is primarily aimed at science graduates (B.Sc and related degrees), but engineering graduates can also apply if they meet the eligibility for the target programme. Check the specific programme's eligibility on the official JAM site.

Is a JAM score valid for more than one year?

The validity of a JAM score is set in the official brochure each year. Typically scores are valid for admission in the same academic year as the examination. Verify on the official site for the current year's rules.
