Understand what GATE is and what it unlocks
GATE (the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering) is a computer-based test conducted by IISc and the IITs — the organizing institute rotates each year — on behalf of the National Coordination Board under the Ministry of Education. A valid GATE score is used for M.Tech/MS and some PhD admissions (at IITs, NITs, IIITs, IISc and other institutes) and by many public-sector undertakings (PSUs) for recruitment.
The score is valid for three years, so a good score keeps several doors open.
Know your paper and syllabus
GATE has many subject papers, and you choose the paper that matches your discipline (with a limited option to take a second paper, as allowed in the official rules). Download the official syllabus for your paper and for the General Aptitude section that every paper includes, and map out the topics before you start.
Build fundamentals, then practise with previous papers
GATE rewards conceptual depth. Strengthen the core topics first, then work through previous years' question papers to learn the style and depth of the questions. Track which topics recur and where you lose time, and revise those.
Practise in CBT mode with the virtual calculator
Because GATE is a computer-based test with an on-screen virtual calculator, take timed full-length mocks on screen and practise with the virtual calculator so the interface and pacing feel familiar on exam day. Negative marking applies for some question types — confirm the current marking scheme in the official bulletin.
- Download the official syllabus for your paper + General Aptitude
- Master fundamentals, then drill previous-year papers
- Take timed on-screen mocks with the virtual calculator
- Confirm the current marking scheme (including negative marking) officially
Plan realistically — no shortcuts
Build a steady, sustainable timetable rather than cramming, and revise regularly. Coaching is optional; the official syllabus, standard textbooks and previous papers cover what you need. No coaching or guide can guarantee a rank — consistent preparation is what helps.
Frequently asked questions
Can I prepare for GATE without coaching?
Yes. Many candidates prepare on their own using the official syllabus, standard textbooks and previous years' papers. Coaching is optional, not required. Be cautious of anyone promising a guaranteed rank or seat.
How long is a GATE score valid?
A GATE score is valid for three years from the date the result is announced. Confirm the current validity on the official GATE site.
Who conducts GATE?
GATE is conducted jointly by IISc and the IITs, with one of them acting as the organizing institute each year, on behalf of the National Coordination Board under the Ministry of Education.
