Why ZJU and Hangzhou, and what this guide covers

Zhejiang University (ZJU) is a large comprehensive research university based in Hangzhou, in Zhejiang province, with a very broad programme range across the sciences, engineering, medicine, agriculture, the humanities and the social sciences. Its scale and breadth mean international students can find programmes across many fields on one campus system.

The International College and the online application system

International admissions and services are handled by the International College of Zhejiang University (ICZU). Its English admissions site lists schools, programmes, application guides, scholarships and fee information, and applications are submitted through ZJU's international student online system.

Apply directly through the official system; no agent can guarantee admission, and paying for a "guaranteed" place is a warning sign. Read the specific programme's page to confirm which requirements and windows apply to you.

The ZJU International Campus and joint-degree route

Alongside its main Hangzhou campuses, ZJU runs an International Campus (in Haining) offering English-taught and joint/dual-degree programmes delivered with international partner universities — for example the ZJU–UIUC Institute (ZJUI).

These programmes have their own admission pages and may sit under a separate application route from the main-campus programmes, so read the specific programme's official instructions to see which portal, language requirement and deadlines apply.

Application windows: bachelor's, master's and PhD

ZJU admits bachelor's, master's and doctoral international students, each with its own application window, eligibility and document set; intakes are usually in autumn, with some spring options.

Undergraduate applicants apply on their secondary qualifications plus a language result; graduate applicants apply to a specific programme and may need to align with a research direction or supervisor. Confirm the current windows on the official admissions site — they change every cycle.

Scholarships and language requirements

Funding at ZJU comes from ZJU's own scholarships and from the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which ZJU hosts under the Chinese University Program. A CSC applicant to ZJU applies to both the university and CSC, and ZJU may nominate strong candidates. Amounts, quotas and deadlines differ between ZJU scholarships and CSC and change annually — verify current terms on ZJU's official scholarship pages and the CSC portal, and never pay anyone promising a guaranteed scholarship.

Whether you submit HSK (for Chinese-taught programmes) or IELTS/TOEFL (for English-taught programmes) depends on the programme's teaching language, and the exact minimum level is set per programme.
