NIFT and NID Entrance: A Guide

Two leading design institutes

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) and the National Institute of Design (NID) are among India's best-known design institutes. NIFT focuses strongly on fashion and related design fields, while NID offers a broad range of design disciplines. Each conducts its own admission process.

What the entrance processes assess

Design entrance tests generally assess creative aptitude, observation, visualisation, and design thinking rather than rote knowledge, and often include a studio or situation test and an interview. NID's admission uses a Design Aptitude Test, and NIFT admission is through the NIFT entrance examination (conducted by the NTA). The exact stages and pattern are set officially each year.

How to prepare

Preparation works best when it builds genuine design skills — regular sketching and observation, practising the official question types, and developing a portfolio. Because these tests reward original thinking, copied or templated answers tend to score poorly.
