What IELTS is and why Canadian universities ask for it

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) measures your English ability across four skills — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Canadian universities ask international applicants whose first language is not English to demonstrate that they can study comfortably in English, and IELTS is one of the most widely accepted ways to do that.

For university study you almost always need the IELTS Academic version (not General Training). Always confirm which version a specific program accepts before you book.

How IELTS is scored

Each of the four sections is scored on a band scale from 1 to 9, and these are averaged into an overall band score (also 1 to 9, in half-band steps). Many Canadian programs look at both your overall band and your minimum band in each section, so a strong overall score with one weak section may still fall short.

Why the minimum band varies (do not rely on a fixed number)

There is no single national IELTS requirement for Canada. Each university — and often each program within it — sets its own minimum band. Undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs frequently differ, and some competitive programs ask for higher scores than the university's general minimum.

Because these minimums are reviewed and can change each admission cycle, do not rely on a number you saw elsewhere. Check the official admissions or English-language-requirements page of the specific university and program, and verify on the official source before you apply.

Booking, validity, and the IELTS report

You book IELTS through an official test provider (British Council or IDP). After the test you receive a Test Report Form, and universities typically want results that are recent — many treat IELTS scores as valid for up to two years. Plan your test date so that your scores will still be within the accepted validity window when you apply and when you enrol.

IELTS for the study permit vs. for admission

It is worth separating two things. First, the university needs proof of English for admission — that is where your IELTS band matters most. Second, a Canadian study permit is an immigration document handled by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC); a language test can support some study-permit pathways.
