What CSAB Special Rounds are

The Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) conducts additional seat-allocation rounds — the "CSAB Special" rounds — after the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling concludes. Their purpose is to fill seats in the NIT+ System (NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded/Government-Funded Technical Institutes, or GFTIs) that remain vacant at the end of JoSAA.

Because JoSAA and CSAB are separate processes, participating in CSAB Special is not automatic. According to CSAB's official material, interested candidates must complete a fresh registration on the CSAB portal, and the procedures for registration, choice filling and locking, seat allotment and fee payment differ from those of JoSAA.

In short: if seats are still empty after JoSAA, CSAB Special gives eligible JEE (Main) candidates a further opportunity to be considered for those NIT+ vacancies.

Who typically participates

CSAB Special is aimed at candidates eligible for the NIT+ System — that is, those with a valid JEE (Main) rank in the relevant category, subject to the eligibility conditions published by CSAB for that year.

Both categories of candidate commonly consider it: those who received no seat in JoSAA and want a fresh chance at leftover NIT+ seats, and those who already hold a JoSAA seat but hope to improve to a different NIT+ option. Whether — and how — a candidate holding an existing seat can participate is governed by CSAB's rules for the year, so this must be checked on the official portal.

CSAB also runs distinct schemes such as CSAB-NEUT (for candidates from North Eastern states and certain Union Territories lacking such facilities). These have their own eligibility and are separate from the general CSAB Special rounds.

How it differs from JoSAA

The most important thing to understand is that CSAB Special is a standalone process, not a continuation of your JoSAA login. You register again, fill a fresh set of choices from the seats available at that stage, and lock them within CSAB's own schedule.

CSAB states that registration, choice filling/locking, seat allotment and fee payment all differ from the JoSAA procedures. The seats on offer are the vacancies left after JoSAA, so the available institutes and branches at this stage can look different from what was open earlier.

It is also important to note that IIT seats are allocated only through JoSAA; the CSAB Special rounds concern the NIT+ System. Read the current CSAB business rules and schedule for exactly which institutes and seat types are included in a given year.

How to prepare and what to watch

If you plan to use CSAB Special, keep your JEE (Main) credentials and documents ready and monitor the official CSAB portal for the opening of registration immediately after JoSAA closes — the window is separate and time-bound.

Approach choice filling with the same discipline as JoSAA: list every available seat you would accept, order it strictly by your true preference, and understand the round-to-round willingness/upgrade and reporting rules that CSAB publishes for that year. Complete any required seat-acceptance fee and reporting within the stated window, or you may forfeit an allotted seat.

Because the number of special rounds, the fee mechanics, deadlines and eligibility can change year to year, confirm every specific on the official CSAB website (csab.nic.in) rather than relying on last year's pattern.

  • Register fresh on the CSAB portal after JoSAA ends — it is not automatic.
  • Choices are filled again from the post-JoSAA vacant NIT+ seats.
  • Complete acceptance fee and reporting within CSAB's stated window.
  • IIT seats are via JoSAA only; CSAB Special concerns NITs/IIITs/GFTIs.
  • Verify rounds, eligibility, fees and dates on csab.nic.in each year.

Frequently asked questions

Is CSAB Special automatic if I was in JoSAA?

No. CSAB Special is a separate process — you must complete a fresh registration on the official CSAB portal after JoSAA concludes. Your JoSAA participation does not carry you into CSAB automatically. Registration, choice filling, allotment and fee payment all follow CSAB's own procedures and schedule.

Which institutes are covered by CSAB Special rounds?

CSAB Special rounds fill vacant seats in the NIT+ System — NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded/Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). IIT seats are allocated only through JoSAA, not CSAB. Check the official CSAB portal for the exact list of participating institutes and seat types in a given year.

Can I participate if I already have a JoSAA seat?

Whether a candidate holding a JoSAA seat can join CSAB Special, and on what terms, is set by CSAB's business rules for that year. Some candidates use it to try to improve to another NIT+ option. Read the current rules on csab.nic.in carefully before deciding, as conditions can change.

What is the difference between CSAB Special and CSAB-NEUT?

CSAB Special rounds fill general post-JoSAA vacancies in the NIT+ System. CSAB-NEUT is a distinct scheme for candidates from North Eastern states and certain Union Territories that lack such facilities, with its own eligibility and process. Confirm which applies to you on the official CSAB website.

Do I need a fresh JEE Main score for CSAB Special?

CSAB Special uses your existing JEE (Main) rank; there is no separate exam. Eligibility is based on your JEE (Main) result and CSAB's published conditions for the year. Keep your JEE (Main) credentials and documents ready, and verify eligibility details on csab.nic.in.

When do CSAB Special rounds happen?

They are conducted after JoSAA counselling ends, in a separate, time-bound window. The exact dates and number of rounds are announced each year on the official CSAB portal. Monitor csab.nic.in around the close of JoSAA so you do not miss the registration window.
