JoSAA Counselling Process Explained
How seat allocation works after JEE — registration, choice filling, rounds, the float/slide/freeze options, and how IIT and NIT seats are allotted.
What JoSAA does
The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) conducts the single, combined counselling process that allots seats across the IITs, NITs, IIITs, and other Government-Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). IIT seats are allotted on the basis of the JEE Advanced rank, while NIT, IIIT, and GFTI seats are allotted on the basis of the JEE Main rank.
The step-by-step flow
JoSAA counselling typically follows this sequence:
- Register on the official JoSAA portal using your JEE credentials.
- Fill and lock your choices — list colleges and branches in your true order of preference.
- Seats are allotted over several rounds based on rank, category, and your locked choices.
- For each allotment you can Freeze (accept and stop), Float (accept but stay open to higher preferences), or Slide (accept but stay open to better branches in the same institute).
- Confirm the seat by paying the seat-acceptance fee and completing online reporting / document verification.
- Later rounds may upgrade your seat based on your float/slide choice and vacancies.
Choice filling matters most
Your choice list is the single most important step. Allotment is strictly by preference order and rank, so list every option you would genuinely accept, in the order you actually prefer — not in the order you think you will "get". Leaving out an option means you can never be allotted it.
After JoSAA: CSAB special rounds
After the main JoSAA rounds conclude, the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) usually conducts special rounds to fill seats that remain vacant in the NIT+ system. These are a separate registration. The number of rounds and exact dates are announced officially each year — verify them on the official JoSAA and CSAB websites.
Frequently asked questions
Is JoSAA counselling for both IITs and NITs?
Yes. JoSAA runs one combined process: IIT seats are allotted on the JEE Advanced rank and NIT/IIIT/GFTI seats on the JEE Main rank.
What is the difference between Float, Slide, and Freeze?
Freeze means you accept the seat and want no further changes. Float means you accept but remain open to any higher-preference seat. Slide means you accept but remain open only to better branches in the same institute.
What happens if I do not get a seat in JoSAA?
You can participate in the CSAB special rounds, which fill remaining vacant seats in the NIT+ system through a separate registration.
