Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff and Havaldar (CBIC & CBN) Examination

SSC MTS is the Staff Selection Commission's examination for Multi-Tasking (Non-Technical) Staff — a Group C, non-gazetted, non-ministerial post in central government ministries, departments and offices across states and union territories. It also recruits for Havaldar posts in the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) and the Central Bureau of Narcotics (CBN), under the Ministry of Finance. It is a computer-based examination of two sessions held on the same day. Session-I and the General Awareness section are offered in English, Hindi and 13 regional languages. Both sessions must be qualified, and the merit list comes from Session-II. Havaldar candidates shortlisted on their Session-II scores then take a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test run by CBIC and CBN. Vacancies, dates and cut-offs are set in each year's notice.

Once a year in SSC's examination calendar (the 2025 examination's computer-based test ran 4–20 February 2026; the 2026 notice had not been published as of 30 September 2026)

90 minutes: two 45-minute sessions on the same day (60 minutes each for candidates eligible for a scribe) — per the 2025 notice

Score range

Session-I: two parts of 20 questions and 60 marks each, no negative marking. Session-II: two parts of 25 questions and 75 marks each, with 1 mark deducted per wrong answer. Both sessions must be qualified, and merit is decided on Session-II alone (2025 notice).

Eligibility

Class 10 (Matriculation) pass from a recognised board by the cut-off date. Age 18–25 for MTS, or 18–27 for Havaldar and some MTS posts (as on 1 August 2025, with category relaxations per the notice). Havaldar candidates must also pass a Physical Efficiency Test and Physical Standard Test. Open to Indian citizens, and to certain others listed in the notice who hold a Government of India eligibility certificate.
