What UPTAC (AKTU) counselling is

UPTAC — Uttar Pradesh Technical Admission Counselling — is the centralised online counselling for admission to technical programmes in Uttar Pradesh institutes affiliated to Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University (AKTU). The help desk for UPTAC is managed through AKTU.

A rank alone does not get you a seat; UPTAC is the official process that maps your entrance rank to a specific college and branch through one common portal, uptac.admissions.nic.in. You register once and participate in a series of allotment rounds rather than applying to each college separately.

Because UP has a very large technical-education base, UPTAC pools many institutes into a single counselling covering several programme types. The schedule, exact rounds and fees are announced fresh each year, so use this guide for the process and verify current details on the official portal.

Step 1 — Eligibility and registration

Admission through UPTAC is merit-based on a valid entrance rank. For B.Tech, that rank is JEE Main; other programmes (such as B.Pharm, MCA, MBA or B.Arch) are admitted on their own specified entrance scores like CUET or NATA. Check the exact accepted exam and eligibility conditions for your target course on the official portal, and make sure you also meet the programme's academic eligibility (subjects and qualifying marks).

You begin by registering on uptac.admissions.nic.in, entering your details, and paying the counselling registration/participation fee online. At registration you also declare category, sub-category and any state-quota or reservation claims, which shape the seats you can be allotted.

The fee amount and registration deadline are set each cycle. Do not rely on last year's figure — verify the current fee and window on the official notification before you pay.

Step 2 — Choice filling and locking

After registration you fill and lock your choices: you select college-and-branch combinations from those you are eligible for and arrange them strictly in order of preference. The seat you most want goes at the top.

The allotment logic descends your list and stops at the best seat your rank, category and seat availability allow, so ordering is decisive. Fill enough realistic choices to avoid going unallotted, but never rank a seat above another you would actually prefer.

Once arranged, you lock the list. Locked choices are what the system uses, so review them before the window closes. UPTAC may provide guidance or a preview to help you gauge outcomes — treat any such preview as indicative, not a promise.

Step 3 — Seat allotment, freeze and float

Seats are allotted round by round on the basis of merit rank, your locked choices, reservation and seat availability. After each round you log in to see whether a seat has been allotted.

When you are allotted a seat you generally choose between two responses. Freeze means you accept the seat as final and exit further rounds — no upgrade, but certainty. Float means you accept the current seat as a guaranteed backup while remaining in the next round for a possible upgrade to a higher choice.

Float is the way to keep improving without losing what you already hold, since floating should not give you a worse seat than your current one. Read the official option descriptions each cycle, as the exact labels and consequences can be updated.

Step 4 — Reporting, sliding and special/spot rounds

An allotment must be secured. After a round you complete the required steps — typically confirming your choice (freeze/float), completing document verification, and reporting to the allotted institute within the deadline. Verification checks your originals against the eligibility you claimed.

UPTAC's later stages can include internal sliding within institutes for already-reported candidates and one or more special/spot rounds to fill seats that remain vacant after the general rounds. If you have not secured a preferred seat, track these later-round notifications closely.
