NEET Counselling Process (MCC) Explained
How NEET seat allotment works — the All India Quota and state quota, the role of the MCC, registration, choice filling, and rounds.
NEET qualifying is not the same as admission
Clearing NEET makes you eligible for admission, but seats are awarded through a separate counselling process. There are broadly two channels: the All India Quota (AIQ) and deemed/central universities, handled by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), and the State Quota, handled by each state's own counselling authority.
The role of the MCC
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts the counselling for the All India Quota seats, deemed universities, central universities, and certain other categories. Each state separately conducts counselling for its state-quota seats. You may need to register for both, depending on the seats you are targeting.
The general flow
MCC counselling typically follows this sequence:
- Register on the official MCC counselling portal within the announced window.
- Fill and lock your choices of college and course in order of preference.
- Seats are allotted over multiple rounds based on your NEET rank, category, and choices.
- Report to the allotted college and complete document verification to confirm the seat.
- Later rounds and a mop-up/stray-vacancy round fill remaining seats.
Verify the current schedule
The number of rounds, eligibility for each round, and the exact schedule are announced officially each year and can change. Always follow the current notices on the official MCC website and your state counselling authority's website rather than older cycles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between MCC and state counselling?
The MCC conducts counselling for the All India Quota, deemed and central universities, and certain other seats. Each state separately runs counselling for its state-quota seats.
Do I need to register separately for AIQ and state quota?
Generally yes — All India Quota counselling (MCC) and state-quota counselling are separate registrations. Register for the channels that cover the seats you want.
Does qualifying NEET guarantee an MBBS seat?
No. Qualifying makes you eligible; a seat depends on your rank, category, choices, and seat availability through the counselling process.
