JEE Main Eligibility Criteria Explained
Who can apply for JEE Main — Class 12 subject requirements, number of attempts, age policy, and the percentage norms that apply for NIT/IIIT admission.
Academic qualification
To appear for JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech), you must have passed the Class 12 examination (or an equivalent qualifying examination) with the required subjects, or be appearing in it in the current year. Physics and Mathematics are compulsory subjects, along with one of Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology, or a technical vocational subject.
Number of attempts
Candidates can attempt JEE Main in three consecutive years. JEE Main is conducted twice a year, and a candidate may appear in both sessions in the same year — both sessions in one year together count as one year of attempts.
Age limit
There is no age limit to appear for JEE Main. Candidates of any age who meet the qualifying-examination requirement can apply. However, individual institutes you seek admission to may set their own age criteria, so check those separately.
Percentage norms for admission
Qualifying for JEE Main and getting admission are two different things. For admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs through JoSAA, candidates generally need to meet a Class 12 performance norm — historically either a minimum aggregate percentage or a position within the top percentile of their board. These norms are set each year and have changed in the past, so always confirm the current requirement in the official information bulletin before relying on it.
