Chonnam National University is a flagship national university serving the southwest of Korea, with its main campus at Yongbong-ro in Buk-gu, Gwangju. It is broad and comprehensive: its colleges run from engineering and agriculture through the life sciences and humanities to professional fields including dentistry and medicine.

One caution before you go further. Chonnam National University (Gwangju, web domain jnu.ac.kr) is a different institution from Chungnam National University (Daejeon, cnu.ac.kr), and both are abbreviated CNU. Work from the full name and city, not the abbreviation.

Gwangju and Yeosu: two campuses, different fields

Chonnam operates across more than one campus, and they are not interchangeable. The Gwangju campus carries the majority of its colleges and graduate schools, including the professional programs. A second campus in the coastal city of Yeosu, at Daehak-ro, holds its own departments with a marine and fisheries orientation that follows directly from its setting on the southern coast.

Which campus teaches your major decides which admission unit you apply to, and the majors, facilities and any English-taught options differ between them. The Office of International Affairs publishes the unit list for each intake — read it before choosing, because the campus is not something you adjust later.

How international admission is organised

The Office of International Affairs coordinates Chonnam's international admission track, which sits separately from the domestic Korean route and publishes the current unit list for each intake. Undergraduate admission is typically document-based, with an interview possible for some programs.

The university also admits graduate students at master's and doctoral level and takes research and exchange students, with requirements set per department — a research-based application may expect a research plan or contact with a prospective supervisor. Because the categories are genuinely different, confirm which one you fall into and read the process for that category on the official pages.

Korean-language study on campus

Language is often the real constraint at a regional national university, where the teaching is predominantly in Korean. Chonnam is active in Korean-language teaching for international participants: the university has hosted the US Department of State's Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Korean language program, an externally funded program for selected participants that is separate from degree admission.

That is context for the university's language-teaching capacity, not an admission route — a CLS place is awarded by that program, not by Chonnam, and it does not lead to degree admission. For degree study, the relevant question is the Korean level your department requires, which is set per program.

Costs, language and what to verify

Tuition at Chonnam follows the public fee structure that applies to national universities and is generally below comparable private universities, while Gwangju and Yeosu cost less to live in than Seoul. The university runs its own international-student scholarships and tuition reductions, and features in the Global Korea Scholarship administered by NIIED.

Teaching is predominantly in Korean, so Korean-taught programs ask for evidence such as a TOPIK level — commonly with a higher level expected by graduation than at entry — while English-taught study asks for an English test score. Chonnam sets which tests it accepts and at what level, per program.
