What BPT is

BPT (Bachelor of Physiotherapy) is an undergraduate degree in physiotherapy, a regulated allied health profession in India. The programme is generally 4.5 years in duration, including a compulsory six-month internship that is part of the degree requirement.

Physiotherapy education and registration in India is increasingly governed by the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021, which aims to standardise the allied health professions. Confirm that the institution you are considering is affiliated with a recognised university and, where applicable, approved under the NCAHP framework.

How admission works

Admission routes for BPT vary across states and institutions. Some institutions use NEET scores as part of the admission process, while others rely on Class 12 merit (typically requiring Physics, Chemistry, and Biology), and a few conduct institution-specific tests. There is currently no single mandatory national entrance test for BPT across all institutions.

What the course covers

BPT combines foundational biomedical sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology) with clinical physiotherapy subjects such as musculoskeletal and orthopaedic physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, cardiopulmonary physiotherapy, paediatric physiotherapy, and sports physiotherapy. Clinical training across affiliated hospitals is an integral part of the programme, and the degree is completed by a six-month compulsory internship.

After BPT

After completing BPT and fulfilling any applicable registration requirements, graduates can work in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, sports facilities, and community health settings. Many go on to postgraduate study — Masters in Physiotherapy (MPT) — to specialise in a specific area. Some pursue research, teaching, or public-health roles.
