IELTS vs PTE for the Australia Student Visa

Two recognised tests, one goal

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) and PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) are two of the most widely recognised English-proficiency tests for studying in Australia. Both are accepted by many Australian universities for admission, and both are listed among the tests the Australian Department of Home Affairs recognises for the Student visa (subclass 500).

Neither test is universally "better" — they assess the same four skills in different formats, and the right choice depends on which format suits you, where you plan to apply, and which test the specific university and visa pathway you are targeting will accept. How each test is structured

Both tests assess Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The way they are delivered differs, and this is often the deciding factor for students.

• IELTS Academic — available as a paper-based or computer-delivered test; the Speaking section is a one-to-one interview with a human examiner.
• PTE Academic — fully computer-based; Speaking is recorded at a computer and scored by automated technology, with no human interviewer.
• Both cover the same four skills, but the task types, timing, and on-screen experience differ — try official practice material for each before deciding.

How they are scored

IELTS reports results on a band scale for each of the four skills and an overall band score. PTE Academic reports results on a points scale for the overall score and for individual skills.

Because the scales are different, a score on one test does not map one-to-one onto the other. Universities and the visa framework publish the minimum they require on each test separately. Do not assume an equivalence — check the specific number each institution and the Student visa pathway ask for on their official pages.

Results timing and retakes

Turnaround time for results differs between the two tests and can change, so the official websites are the place to confirm current timelines. Both tests can be retaken, and both run test sessions frequently at authorised test centres.

When planning, work backwards from your university application deadlines and any visa timelines, and book early — availability at your preferred centre and date is not guaranteed.
