How to Prepare for the CAT

Understand the exam first

Effective preparation starts with understanding the current CAT pattern and sections from the official notification. Knowing what the test actually measures — verbal ability and reading comprehension, data interpretation and logical reasoning, and quantitative ability — helps you plan your time across topics.

Build fundamentals by section

Most candidates strengthen the basics in each area before moving to harder problems: reading regularly and practising comprehension for the verbal section; working through data sets and reasoning puzzles for DILR; and revising core mathematics for the quantitative section. The goal is accuracy first, then speed.

Practise with mock tests

Regular full-length mock tests under timed conditions are a common part of preparation. They help you get used to the on-screen format, manage sectional timing, and identify weak areas to revisit. Reviewing mistakes after each mock is often more valuable than simply taking more tests.

Plan and stay consistent

Because the syllabus is broad, a steady study routine over several months usually works better than last-minute effort. Set realistic weekly goals, track progress honestly, and adjust your plan based on your mock-test performance. There is no single "guaranteed" method — consistency and review matter most.
